- Useful Information
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
It has often been stated that Upper Teesdale is perhaps the most complete dale in England. This is because of its unique and comprehensive blend of landscape, landforms, history and heritage.
This publication provides you with an excellent opportunity to sample some of its amazing delights in a series of enjoyable walks, mostly centred upon the picturesque village of Middleton-in-Teesdale, the capital of Upper Teesdale.
The village itself possesses much of interest and appeal and has a quaint and traditional character. As a settlement of some 1000 people and also serving the surrounding farming community, it has plenty of services to satisfy the needs of visitors. There are two hotels, several inns, tearooms, a surprising variety of shops, plus a very helpful tourist information centre.
Indeed, should you be planning a visit, some of this information can be accessed via the internet and there is a good selection of websites and telephone numbers to be found on page 48 of this publication.
As well as being excellent walking country, sitting as it does on both the famous Pennine Way long distance footpath and the more recent Teesdale Way, it provides an excellent base for a holiday of discovery.
Teesdale was once the most northerly of the Yorkshire Dales and large parts of Upper Teesdale lie today, within the ‘North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’.
Within its border can be found incredible castles such as Raby Castle, Barnard Castle and the lesser but unique Bowes Castle. There is also the famous Bowes Museum, Egglestone Abbey, Eggleston Hall and Rokeby Park, plus the lime-burning remains of ‘Parkers’ Kilns’.
There are six lakes, several rivers, a wealth of waterfalls including High Force, England’s largest, and Cauldron Snout, England’s longest cascade. Nature abounds, particularly in the Upper Teesdale National Nature Reserve with its unique relics of the Ice Age.
There is so much to see, do, experience and enjoy, but the next ‘step’ is up to you! Just choose your route...ither circular or linear.
All you have to do is study the general location of our selection of 14 walk routes, then consult their individual route description and route map before making your personal choice. Each 'circular' walk starts and finishes at the same point for your convenience. For those who decide to follow a single, linear route rather than our published ‘circular’ routes, it will be necessary for you to arrange to definitely be picked up at a specific location at a specific time to avoid danger in adverse weather.
