GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Many years ago, I can remember my aunt buying me copies of some of James Herriot’s first books and being enthralled at their stories. Such has been his success that today, over 35 years later, we are producing this revision of one of our most successful guidebooks which features the story of James Herriot and Herriot Country, the region he made famous across the globe. We hope you enjoy it.

As ardent fans already know, the  man behind the James Herriot pen-name was Yorkshire vet, Alf Wight. He used a lifetime of real-life experiences, gained from his work throughout the northern Yorkshire Dales and the eastern North Yorkshire Moors national parks, as a basis for his stories. Therefore in his stories it is possible to substitute James Herriot for Alf Wight, as many of his tales were about himself, his family and his friends.... as well as the many farmers he met on a daily basis!

Based in Thirsk, he worked from a surgery that is now the popular visitor attraction known as ‘The World of James Herriot’. From this base, as well as from the partner veterinary practice in Leyburn, Alf came to know and love every corner of his practice which covered the Hambleton Hills, Coverdale, Swaledale, Wensleydale.... the very heart of Herriot Country.
