Summer Wine Country guidebook and photo guide - Discovery Guides. Every year, hundreds of thousands of visitors flock to Summer Wine Country in the Pennine Hills of West Yorkshire and on the northern fringe of the Peak District, to enjoy the region made world-famous by the longest-running comedy series of all time.
It was in 1971 that the first pilot programme was broadcast, quickly followed in 1972 with the first television series. Still being filmed today, 'Last of the Summer Wine' has proved to be a continuous success for approaching four decades. As well as current episodes screened on the BBC, repeat programmes have been regularly shown on Sky television.
With such a remarkable longevity and with millions of fans worldwide, it is hardly surprising that so many visit the region and the locations that they have seen on their television screens. Therefore, within this publication we hope to be able to provide these fans with a most comprehensive pictorial representation of both the locations used and the 'Summer Wine' countryside in its own right.
The town of Holmfirth, nesting in the Holme Valley, is commonly referred to as providing the heart of 'Summer Wine'. However, it is often overlooked that many locations are to be found in the nearby small town of Marsden in the valley of the River Colne.
This photoguide follows a structured approach as detailed in the 'Contents' on page one. The main settlements of Holmfirth and Marsden have their own special sections, as do the classic locations and features in both these and other settlements. Of these, perhaps the most famous are 'Sid's and Ivy's Cafe', Nora Batty's & Compo's houses and the Last of the Summer Wine Exhibition' in Holmfirth, plus 'Aunty Wainwright's shop', the butcher's shop, Peel Street and the Canal side in Marsden, as well as the famous packhorse bridge and other locations near Hey Green.
There is so much of 'Summer Wine' interest to see and do in the area, that it can sometimes be difficult knowing where to start. Whilst the towns of Holmfirth and Marsden can be easily explored on foot, finding the rural locations is much more difficult. However, it is possible to book a short 'Summer Wine TV Locations' mini coach tour from Sid and Ivy's Cafe in the centre of Holmfirth - they are certainly very interesting and informative.
We hope that our photoguide provides you with a treasure chest of fond memories of this remarkable series loved by millions.
